Screening and early detection
Infrastructures for screening and early detection aim to create systems that facilitate and ensure equal access to screening, interventions, and research, particularly targeting high-risk groups. These infrastructures also include initiatives for raising awareness about the importance of early detection and diagnostics.
This theme covers ongoing research and implementation of new discoveries on screening and early detection within the CCI.
Criteria and targets
Research in screening and early detection
- Funding mechanisms for screening and early detection in cancer research
- Availability of different screening modalities
- Adoption of new technologies, evaluation of new techniques
- Health economics analysis
Screening programs, protocols and guidelines
- Well-defined role of CCI and service providers in the referral pathway and screening program
- Identification of screening population, including sub-populations and non-attenders
- At least 85% of population reached
- Education and training in place for professionals, patients, and citizens
Organisation and structure
- Harmonisation and reporting of cancer registry data on a regional, national and European level
- Governance includes well-defined responsibilities for organisation of screening and prevention, data available for auditing, standardised screening, implementation of novel methods, protocols for reviewing performance
- Participation and collaborations in national and international networks
ICT
- Indicators compatible with European Information Cancer System (ECIS) for the ICT systems.
- Data from various sources are effectively integrated into the ICT structure (EHRs, imaging systems, laboratory databases
- Patient access to medical records
- Telehealth integration (in-case of home-based tests or follow-ups)
